Mrs. Good's Math Plans, Week of April 9, 2012

Core Math: I finished grading the unit tests about the middle of last week and I was disappointed in the scores. Because of the low scores and lack of learning they indicate, I am going to hand back the tests Monday, we will correct them in class, students will keep the corrected tests and use them for a study guide Monday evening, and then Tuesday students will re-take a very similar test. Most points were lost in the part that tested knowledge of measurement conversions, like how many centimeters in a meter, so that part of the re-test will be identical to the original test. The rest of the test will have similar problems with different numbers.

I designed the test to be used without a calculator, with what I thought were simple calculations like 20 x 50 x 40, or 30 x 30. Unfortunately, I found out that many students were not able to do these types of calculations, so Monday’s classwork is to complete a worksheet of simple problems without a calculator. If this worksheet is not finished in class it is to be completed as homework without a calculator.

·         Monday – Classwork: correct tests, complete no-calculator worksheet. Homework: none unless the worksheet is not completed.
·         Tuesday – Made to Measure unit test re-takes.
·         Wednesday – Classwork: complete section summary guided notes from page 14; pages 8 & 9, problem 1. Complete the activity on page 9 (draw and label at least eight different triangles); do page 10, problem 5. Homework: none.
·         Thursday – Classwork: pages 11-13, problems 6-11; p. 15, problem 1. Homework: page 15, problems 2 & 3 and For Further Reflection.
·         Friday – Classwork: pages 16-18, problems 1-8 and the activity at the bottom of page 16 (skip #4 & /#7) Homework: none.
Math Exploratory:
“Isometric Mat Plans” packet is due at the end of the period Monday. “Isometric Drawings” packet is due at the end of the period Thursday.

Mrs. Good's Math Plans, Week of April 2, 2012

Core Math: We finished our unit on measurement last week with the unit test and folder collection on Friday. This week we have MAP testing, with communication arts on Tuesday and math on Wednesday. Students should bring a calculator on Wednesday and a water bottle on both days. We will start a new unit on Wednesday, “Triangles and Beyond,” where we study the unique properties of triangles. No homework will be assigned this week because of MAP testing, but students are expected to complete all classwork.
·         Monday – Classwork: MAP review. Homework: none.

·         Tuesday – Communication Arts MAP testing in the morning. 26 minute periods the rest of the day. Classwork: MAP review. Homework: none.

·         Wednesday – Math MAP testing in the morning. 26 minute periods the rest of the day. Classwork: Triangle Scavenger Hunt activity. Homework: none.

·         Thursday – Classwork: pages 2-4, problems 2-10 (skip #9). Homework: none.

·         Friday – Classwork: pages 5-7, problems 11-13; pages 6 & 7, problems 1-3 and For Further Reflection. Homework: none.

Math Exploratory:

We will be continuing activities with math rods this week. Although the activities are designed to be completed in class, if students are absent or get behind for other reasons they will have to complete them at home. “Finding the Distance Around,” a packet dealing with perimeter, is due at the end of the period on Monday of this week. The surface area packet, “Painting Rod Lengths,” is due at the end of the period Wednesday, and “Isometric Mat Plans” is due at the end of the period Friday.
